Festive season is pretty much upon us!
If you fancy a Christmassy weekend away without breaking the bank, my suggestion is to hop on the Eurostar to Belgium! We travelled direct from Ebbsfleet to Brussels and were there in less than 2 hours!
Essentially it was a lovely weekend of wandering, eating and being generally cosy and festive! More details below…
WHERE TO STAY
We spent two nights in The Augustin Hotel. It was the perfect choice, situated only a 10 minute walk from the train station and 5 minutes to the city centre.
WHAT TO DO
The main attraction in the city is the Grand Place, especially in the festive period where there is a huge Christmas tree and clever light show!
You can’t not go and have a giggle at Manneken Pis:
We also took a day trip to Bruges via the train. You can climb the 366 steps up to the top of the Belfry Tower (you may recognise it from the film ‘In Bruges’) or take a boat trip but the weather was pretty windy/cold/rainy so we decided not to this time!
We did however visit the Choco-Story museum! Highly recommended…FREE CHOCOLATE INSIDE
Back in Brussels, visit the shops in the lovely Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert
We didn’t have the time, but another popular choice is visiting the Atomium & Mini-Europe just North of the city. There are plenty of museums too!
WHERE/WHAT TO EAT
We certainly couldn’t leave before trying their famous ‘frites and mayo’, or overindulging in delicious Belgian waffles:
We also dined at the following restaurants:
- Spago – yummy Italian
- Davi – a highly rated Thai restaurant
- Yi Chan – delicious Dim Sum for lunch!
- Poules Moules – arguably my favourite meal of the trip. Mussels and frites – what else?!
This isn’t the type of trip whereby you need a solid plan of activities, just go and enjoy the sights and the atmosphere. And the waffles. Definitely enjoy the waffles!
Let me know if you have any questions!
